4 Things You Have To Experience In Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with tons to see and do. While the city is famous for its narrow canals, even narrower houses, “special” coffee shops, and electric Red Light District… it all actually comes down to 4 basic experiences you absolutely have to have in Amsterdam.

At Adventuretects the perfect Amsterdam itinerary wouldn’t be complete without munching down on at least one favorite Dutch delicacy, visiting a museum, seeing some of the picture-perfect sights along the way and finally, exploring the lively nightlife only the locals know of.

In this article, we share our favorite spots – pick one of each to have the perfect day in Amsterdam (Or pick them all, why not?).

1. Taste the Unforgettable Dutch Food

Amsterdam’s famous ‘Concertgebouw’ (or Concert Building) is internationally renowned for its exceptional acoustics and is sure to leave you breathless. If you’re looking for an age-old cultural experience, then this is sure to impress.

Amsterdam is a traveler’s dream. It’s easy to get lost in this beautiful city’s charm. Just remember that it’s extremely popular and knowing what you want to do and when you’ll be doing it ahead of time can be essential to secure your spot. Not sure where to begin? Let Adventuretects take care of all the planning, we will give you our hottest tips to get the best out of Amsterdam!

Hot and Sticky Stroopwafels

We’ve all had someone bring us a packet of stroopwafels from their trip to Europe – but we promise you, eating them hot and fresh in Amsterdam – is unforgettable. Grab your Stroopwafels at the Albert Cuyp Market – you’ll thank us later.

Traditional Old Dutch Pancakes

These aren’t your Mom’s pancakes. Dutch pancakes are over the top, especially at The Pancake Bakery. They have been around since 1973, and they’ve been perfecting their menu ever since – hands down one of the best pancakes you’ll ever have

French Dutch Fries! Yes, please...

Ok, these are to die for. Seriously, the Dutch win hands down – we could eat them all day, every day! And if you’re looking for the best in Amsterdam, there’s no other place to go than Manneken Pis Frites.

Perfectly fried potato chips with dollops of sauce. To die for.

2. Relive the Past in the World-Famous Amsterdam Museums

Amsterdam is known for its Museums. There are the great artists that changed the way we view art or the gripping story of a small (s) hero called Anne Frank. We could spend hours just taking it all in – and so should you.

Anne Frank's House

We’ve all heard the story of Anne Frank, perhaps you’ve read her diary, but to walk through the bookcase that hid the small annex where Anne and her family hid for two years is a life-changing experience.  We can’t explain it, but absolutely this is a MUST. Remember that the tickets go on sale two months in advance and they sell out quick!

Van Gogh Museum

Considered one of the greatest post-impressionists, this museum slowly guides you through the artistic work and interesting life of Vincent van Gogh. Even if you’ve never heard the name of this famous Dutch painter, we’re sure you’ll recognize some of his most famous paintings – like ‘Self-Portrait as a painter’ 1887- 1888.

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without visiting the Rijksmuseum. It houses the largest collection of paintings of the Dutch masters from the Golden Age. It also has the super famous “I AMsterdam” sign at the back – an absolute must for your Instagram.

Stedelijk Museum

We simply couldn’t leave out the Stedelijk Museum. The first question you may ask yourself as you approach this one of a kind museum – Why is it shaped like a tub? Truth is, no one knows, but, to be fair – this is the museum of modern and contemporary visual art and design.

After a visit to the revolution which is the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum offers a view of how art has evolved since then. Prepare to be amazed with works of Lichtenstein, Mondrian, Picasso, Kruger and even some awesome Diego Rivera pieces.

3. See all the Famous Sights - by Boat, Bike, or on Foot

Amsterdam is the perfect city to walk, bike or boat to where you want to be and seeing all the sights this way will make your trip so much more memorable. Find your way around Amsterdam like the locals do!

Fun fact - Every now and then Amsterdam’s local government has to fish out hundreds of bikes that have found their way into the canals.

Ride Past the Pretty Houses of Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the perfect city to explore by bike – and riding along the canal, surrounded by the unique houses of Amsterdam is magical. Remember to buy miniature houses as souvenirs – they’re actually modeled to replicate actual homes in Amsterdam!

Stroll through the Markets of Amsterdam

This is the perfect place to take it slow and find that special souvenir from Amsterdam. Markets are very popular in the city and there are numerous to choose from.

The most popular is Albert Cuyp Market, and it’s open every day of the week except Sundays. Lots of great local cuisine will be on sale, and you can browse around for second-hand books and trinkets.

Another option is the Waterlooplein Market, which is also open every day except Sundays. This famous market offers a wide variety of curiosities – you’ll find anything from old records, and photographs to vintage clothes, and secondhand sunglasses. If a bit of authentic Amsterdam is what you’re after – this is the place.

Explore the Dutch Canals by Boat

Undoubtedly our favorite experience in Amsterdam. Cruising past all the famous postcard-perfect sights, knowing that these man-made canals have transported countless others throughout the centuries.

The three main canals are the Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht, dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age. A must on your Amsterdam itinerary.

4. Experience the Electrifying Nightlife

Amsterdam is a city that never sleeps, there is something for everyone. From the best dance clubs to the top orchestra performances – there is never a dull moment. And of course, everyone needs to at least check out the infamous Red Light District of Amsterdam.

Red Light District

Probably one of the most famous tourist attractions in Amsterdam, a walk through the De Wallen Street is sure to leave you speechless. If you’re curious about the culture of the Red Light District in Amsterdam, we highly recommend the Red Light Secrets Museum. It dives deep into the why’s and how’s – truly fascinating and eye opening. You can even have your picture taken in one of these famous windows – Why not

Duke of Tokyo Nightclub

If you’re looking for a great party – look no further. They guys at Duke’s have got you covered. The energy is palpable and it’s a great place to meet people, have a few cocktails and get silly with new friends in the Karaoke booths. Truly a unique experience.

If you’re keen to go with a private group of friends, just be sure to book in advance. They get booked out pretty fast!

Soak up the Culture at the Concertgebouw

Amsterdam’s famous ‘Concertgebouw’ (or Concert Building) is internationally renowned for its exceptional acoustics and is sure to leave you breathless. If you’re looking for an age-old cultural experience, then this is sure to impress.
